8/14/2003 - First Trip to Paraguay

I am in Rio now. My sister has to contact the US
Embassy (Peace Corps Procedure)I have some good
pictures which I will post when I get home. Although
Amy's (my sister)house is in the "rich" area of the
"city", there are roosters running around in the
street (or dirt road) and cows along the side. They
burn their garbage because there is nothing else to do
with it and when I go to the bathroom, I can't put the
toilet paper in the toilet bowl. Crazy huh? I guess
it isn't called toilet paper because that would
probably confuse everyone. I had a local boy take
several sugar canes from the field and tought me to
suck the sugar directly from the cane. I could feel
my teeth rotting as I did it but it tasted good. Oh
and the busses in Paraguay are fun. But really crazy.
I will only have one foot on the step
in and he takes off. Also, they drive with the doors
open and continue going while you jump off. The
driver doubles as a cashier giving you change as he
drives. Did I mention they are converted yellow
school buses.
Foz de Iguacu was pretty cool. One day there was
enough. Rio has been fun so far. Sunday I head to
Salvador and Wednesday to Recife.
